Criminal defense marketing for the North Shore.

I treat the North Shore as all of Essex County, north of Boston: Lynn, Salem, Peabody, Gloucester, Ipswich, Newburyport, Lawrence, and Haverhill. It is one slice of the larger Metro Boston and Eastern Mass market, with its own courthouses. This page is a stub. I'll add more as I build it out.

Where I draw the North Shore

I define it as Essex County: one county, one page. That is eight district court towns: Lynn, Salem, Peabody, Gloucester, Ipswich, and Newburyport on the coast, plus Lawrence and Haverhill up the Merrimack River. They are Essex County courts too, and they run more like North Shore markets than Boston ones.

Each of these courts draws its own defendants, its own lawyers, and its own local searches. A firm that wants to be found on the North Shore needs a plan that fits the courthouse, not just the county.

The North Shore courts

Court list checked against Mass.gov, September 2026.

District Courts

  • Lynn District Court — the closest of the eight to Boston.5,118 criminal filings, FY2025
  • Salem District Court2,518 criminal filings, FY2025
  • Peabody District Court1,194 criminal filings, FY2025
  • Gloucester District Court — on Cape Ann.570 criminal filings, FY2025
  • Ipswich District Court382 criminal filings, FY2025
  • Newburyport District Court — close to the Merrimack River and the New Hampshire line.1,422 criminal filings, FY2025
  • Lawrence District Court — up the Merrimack River.4,625 criminal filings, FY2025
  • Haverhill District Court — up the Merrimack River.2,423 criminal filings, FY2025

Above district level

  • Essex County Superior Court — 56 Federal St., Salem, with additional locations in Newburyport and Lawrence.784 criminal filings, FY2025
  • Juvenile Courts in Salem, Lynn, Newburyport, and Lawrence. The Lawrence session also serves Haverhill.

Lynn is the busiest court here, followed by Lawrence, Salem, and Haverhill. Together the eight district courts had 18,252 criminal filings in FY2025, about 14% of the District Court criminal filings statewide. Essex County Superior Court added 784 more, about 12% of the statewide Superior Court total.

Caseload figures are new criminal case filings for FY2025 from the Trial Court public year-end case filings dashboard. Counts vary a little by method, and they change, so confirm before relying on them.

The Merrimack River runs through it

I love the Merrimack River. It runs through Concord and Manchester, New Hampshire, where the SEE Science Center is, then crosses into Massachusetts and passes Lowell, Lawrence, and Haverhill before it reaches the ocean near Newburyport. Three of the eight courts on this page sit on it or near its mouth.

It is also why I think Essex County is where Massachusetts and New Hampshire criminal defense lawyers cross over most. If you are looking for lawyers admitted in both states, this is the county where I would expect to find them. For a firm here, that means some of your competition, and some of your referral partners, may work both sides of the state line.
