Bristol County

Bristol and Plymouth Counties each run their own Superior and Juvenile Courts - they don't share a structure the way the four Bristol courts share theirs:
- Bristol County Superior Court, seated in Taunton, handles the felony docket for all of Bristol County.
- Bristol County Juvenile Court sits in Fall River, New Bedford, and Taunton, all three under the same First Justice and Clerk-Magistrate.
- Plymouth County Superior Court serves all of Plymouth County, with criminal sessions held in Brockton.
- Brockton Juvenile Court is a separate Plymouth County division, not part of Bristol's.

Brockton is the busiest single court in the region, ahead of New Bedford - worth knowing if a firm's marketing assumes one of the Bristol County courts is automatically the bigger prize. Combined, these five courts file more criminal cases than Western Mass's entire twelve-court footprint outside Springfield. But Brockton runs on a different logic than the Bristol four: it's Plymouth County, its own Superior and Juvenile Court, and a Boston-commuter-corridor market rather than a Rhode Island border one - worth treating as a related market, not folded into "Bristol County" messaging.

Brockton has the opposite pull: it's the closest of the five courts to Boston, feeding off Route 24 commuter traffic instead of a Providence border crossing.
The Bristol County courts compete with whichever firm is closest across the Rhode Island line. Brockton competes with whichever firm is closest to Boston.
A Fall River or Attleboro firm that ignores the Rhode Island side of its market is leaving visibility on the table, and one that builds for it can pick up cases a purely in-state competitor never sees. New Bedford and Taunton sit further from the border and behave more like standalone city markets, closer to the way Springfield or Worcester operate. Brockton is its own animal again - the busiest court of the five, in a different county, with its own Superior and Juvenile Court, and enough Boston-metro overlap that it may be worth marketing partly alongside Metro Boston content rather than purely as a Bristol County satellite.

I taught a CLE for the Bristol County bar advocates
On September 29, 2026, I taught a CLE for the Bristol County Bar Advocate Program. The topic was using AI to prepare a criminal case. More than 80 people attended, and it ran over an hour. Next, on Wednesday, November 18, 2026, at 4:30 p.m., I am teaching a seminar in New Bedford on the same topic.
A required CLE is a different room than a talk people pay for or choose to attend. Some people are there for the credits they need to stay certified. Cameras can be off. With a group that size, it is hard to tell who is paying attention.
I learned this during the pandemic. I was the head of a college department and taught my classes on Zoom. So I let the comments steer it. I answered what people asked and shaped the talk around that.
