Vermont • Criminal justice • A conversation with Russell Matson

Work in Vermont criminal justice? Let’s talk.

I’m a former Massachusetts criminal defense attorney getting to know more of the people who work in Vermont’s criminal justice system. I’d like to hear about your work, your community, and what someone from outside Vermont tends to miss.

Why Vermont?

I have visited White River Junction three times this year: on the way to Burlington, on the way back, and as a trip of its own. I stayed at the Hotel Coolidge, where I also stayed the night after my honeymoon. This year’s return was both practical and personal.

There is a courthouse there, too. After a career in criminal defense, that is the sort of detail I notice. A town I know through travel is also a place where people work through serious questions every day.

I expect to return to Vermont roughly every month or two. I would like those visits to lead to conversations with people who know the state through their work.

What we could talk about

  • Your role and the part of Vermont you work in.
  • What makes the local criminal justice community distinctive.
  • What has changed in your work, and what people outside the system misunderstand.
  • Where our experience or interests overlap.

There is no presentation to prepare. I am interested in a useful introduction and a chance to listen.

A little about me

I’m Russell Matson, a former criminal defense attorney and law firm owner. My work now includes marketing and consulting for criminal defense firms, along with writing about law, technology, and New England. Running a practice taught me as much about people and organizations as it did about legal procedure.

I bring that experience to the conversation. You bring the Vermont perspective.

Let’s find a time

Send me your name, role, and a couple of times that work for you. We can arrange a brief Zoom conversation by email.
